Jesus Christ, Superstar

Class ends at 12:20, which leaves the whole day to waste away! A group of us decided to go visit Vor Frelsers Kirke - The Church of Our Savior (or, as referred to by everyone, “the church with the spiral staircase”).

Dedicated in 1696, it is the first, and most important, monument of the Danish monarchy. It was quite a walk away, especially since we didn’t quite know where we were going.

Mostly, we walked in the general direction until we could see the tower - and worked our way closer.

Walking away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Copenhagen, especially near Strøget (The Walking Street lined with shops and stores normally very crowded), you see more of the beautiful Copenhagen architecture, the quiet neighborhoods, and picturesque streets. At the top of the stairs - all 400 of them - the view offers one helluva view. The view was stunning, the breadth of a capital city seemingly packed together to fit in the palm of your hand - and the viewfinder of your camera.

Christ, bearing a flag, stands at the top of the gilded globe. However, because of the globe, you can’t reach it and can only see it from the ground.

I thought the way up was narrow - I think the top required you to be a size zero to squeeze between the railings. We stayed in the surrounding neighborhood for quite some time, enjoying the sights before heading back. Our classes take place at the DIS building, which is located across the plaza from one end of Strøget.

On the other end starts the street of Nyhavn (or, as Americans mispronounce it, New Haven), which quite possibly is my favorite street in all of Copenhagen. I’ll have to remember to take lots of pictures of it. We ended up sitting by the canal after getting ice cream (it’s quite amazing) talking to these mid-20-ish year old Danes for almost two hours. Peter, who did most of the talking, gave us a down-to-earth, very opinionated, perspective on Copenhagen, Denmark, and the U.S. (he studied there for some years).

I think I’m going to take it easy tomorrow. There’s a DIS Social tomorrow night. I hope it’s just eating and drinking. If they try to incorporate dancing, it might be worse than awkward freshmen dances - though the 6:1 sex ratio works very well in my favor…
